Blast Effect Analysis - Vulnerability and Threat Assessment

Description:

In recent years, there has been an increased awareness of the vulnerability of civilian assets to deliberate acts of sabotage. Events such as the Oklahoma City bombing, the collapse of the World Trade Centre buildings on September 11, 2001 and the Bali night club bombing, to name a few, have demonstrated that readily available materials can be fashioned into very effective weapons. In light of these events and the severity of the consequences of a concerted effort to inflict damage and disrupt services, it is prudent to consider ways to mitigate the effects of these events on key infrastructure.

Martec staff has considerable expertise using advanced engineering analysis tools and applying them to the assessment of the vulnerability of assets to different types of threats. Martec has also developed specialized tools for performing detailed analysis of the effects of explosive threats. Martec has been involved in threat assessments of bridges and has developed procedures to facilitate vulnerability and threat assessment studies. Typically these studies involved experts in the design and construction and representatives of the owner/operators. The results of these studies can be used to develop defensive measures and procedures to increase the effectiveness of, and reduce the risk to, first responders.
